One Picture, Thousands of Words

26 Apr

While I kinda liked the music of The Beatles back in the day (“Hey Jude” is my favorite), I admit to not being a fan of the post-Beatles John Lennon, although I felt his murder to be cowardly and heinous.  So while checking my emails, I came across this as part of a message from Facebook… and I thought, “Ain’t that the fucking truth?”

I don’t usually like or pay much attention to these things folks love to plaster all over Facebook; most of them are as insipid as all-get-out and so pie-in-the-sky that I shiver from an overload of sugar… but this one got my attention, not as much because Lennon said it, but because it’s a cold smack in the face truism.

I remember when I was in college, the movie “Hannibal” (sequel to “Silence of the Lambs”) was out in theaters. “Hannibal” was a very violent movie full of graphic torture and murder scenes. But many of my fellow college students went to see it, on dates, and in mixed groups of men and women. And I remember thinking, “Why is it socially acceptable to go see a brutally violent movie with a group of young men and women, but not porn or erotic movies?” If someone in that same group of college students suggested going to see a sexually explicit movie, it would probably be considered a major social faux pas.

I don’t know, Harukifan; we’ll put violence right out there for everyone to see… but the thing that brings most people the most joy, we’re not supposed to let anyone know about that; violence doesn’t seem to shame us… but sex does.

I think I was the one who posted that on FB as a ‘Share’. I am a Lennon fan and I know he had said/asked some very intelligent and deep things in his lifetime, this being one of them.

You and Harukifan make good points and good questions about what is acceptable and what isn’t. Violence has pretty much always been acceptable, while sex pretty much always hasn’t been.

I often have wondered why violence is okay but sex isn’t. But then, I am the kid of person who wonders why it is okay for a man to go topless in public but not a woman…Actually, I wonder about a lot of things that really do not, at the core, make any real sense to me.

When it comes to sex, Red, we’re a society of prudes; we still carry the biblical shame of Adam and Eve’s nakedness with us so that should tell you something. So, no, because of this, I can go topless… but you’re not allowed to because that would be indecent. It’s why nudist colonies have to hide their activities, why there are very few clothing-optional beaches or resorts here because in our nakedness, we’re supposed to be ashamed. It’s the same reason why a mother breast feeding her child isn’t allowed to do it anywhere in public – it offends people because even exposing on tit is considered to be indecent and shameful. Does it make sense? I never thought so and every minister I’ve asked about why we should be ashamed of being naked has spouted stuff that only confirms that it doesn’t make sense.
