Not Tonight… But I Don’t Have a Headache, Honey

08 Nov

I just read this… and I wonder how much of this for real?  It doesn’t escape me, however, that any news concerning sexual dysfunction always seems to come out of Europe first – anyone care to ponder why that is?

But while you’re working on that one, read the article… then holla at your boy with your thoughts on the article, otay?

This article is being reported like a lot of research in the UK gets reported. Hype it up, ignore the research methods and avoid discussing the meaning of the numbers. In my opinion, it must have been a slow news day for NBC. Study reports 14.4% report low sexual desire in Portugal. To begin with 85.6% did not report low sexual desire or approximately 43 out 50 men did not. The study was in the statistical range of other studies that studied the same issues. How is this story relevant? Why should readers care?

In my opinion, this story is relevant because NBC had to fill a slot on their news, probably lost a lot of advertising revenue due to their harsh criticism of Obamacare, and probably felt using a story on sex to boost advertising revenue by attracting more viewers. When a news organization reports research it makes it appear the research is authoritative and boosts the prestige of the researcher(s). For many men, women, and couples the research gives the an excuse to deflect from reasons in the relationship that the man is suffering from ‘limp noodle syndrome.’ It feeds into the culture of self-diagnosis, being an armchair psychologist, and denial without really understanding causes. At least for me, this article is completely irrelevant and does not deserve the attention it receives.

In answer to your question why does this type of research seems to come out of Europe? I believe, Europeans are more open sexually and are more comfortable about sex. Plus Europe has different protocol for research and I suspect it makes it easier in Europe to do this type of research. Next I believe European media has a gigantic appetite for reporting frivolous and irrelevant research like this. Once it gets reported in Europe then the US media hears about it then reports it. It is sickening how much useless research gets reported in the UK and Europe. Finally since it is coming from a European university, I have to question if the research was funded by the government or had government. This means the answer to your question involves several factors like government support, media support, sexual openness and research ethics.

I wondered about the relevancy myself except it jives with commercials that are running here in the US about men having low testosterone levels that rob them of energy and, oh, yeah, his desire for sex. Coincidence? Probably not but like you asked, why should readers care? Now, if anything, I could see an article like this being seen by both men and women and just the notion of guys suffering from low libido – and it’s not related to any medications being taken by him – and getting men to go to their doctor and get their testosterone levels checked – my own doctor routinely checks mine since I turned 55 (and it’s been normal).

The thing that seems unfair to me is that while there has been a lot of emphasis on how “Bill” can get his groove back – Viagra and similar medications and now Androgel to take care of that low testosterone problem – there has been absolutely nothing to help women deal with problems with their libido. Well, wait… there are hormone treatments they can take if they are willing to take the many risks, from developing cancers to heart attacks to becoming hirsute and I can’t imagine a woman wanting to take these risks – maybe some would but she’d be more likely to say, “Ain’t no dick worth getting killed for… or having to shave everyday like “Bill” has to!”

Maybe this was NBC’s attempt to use the “sex sells” method to get some of their groove back? I dunno… but I did find the whole thing kinda strange…

Yeah I was going to say slow sex in the news day and how it brings ‘hits’ to the site
